Real Estate Photos and Camera Recommendations

Good photos go a long way. Getting a wide enough lens is going to be key for interior photos.  The average point and shoot camera goes as wide as 24mm but you’ll want to check that specification when purchaing your camera.  The optimal wide angle is going to be between 18mm and 24mm which could only be achieved with a DSLR Camera.  An iPhone or typicaly smarphone can only go as wide as 31mm so its not going to work well for taking photos of smaller rooms.

Good VS bad

One point and shoot camera that starts at 20mm:

PANASONIC LUMIX FZ80 on Amazon for $297

If you want to go the 18-24mm route with a DSLR lens, the lens itself will run about $250-300 like this one: Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM Lens for $269

As for the camera body, you can buy a new for around $400 including an 18-55mm lens but for any DSLR under $1000 you will be getting what’s called a crop sensor instead of a full sensor so you have to multiply that 18mm x 1.5 which actually comes out to 27mm.  So just getting a DSLR camera isn’t going to get you below that 24mm mark to encapsulate the wider angle you’re looking for.

You can however get used DSLR camera bodies for $59-100 like the Canon Rebel XT.  So for $325 total you could be shooting proper wide angle photos similar to what the professional photographers would be doing for you as well.

As for lighting its always a good idea to bring an extra lamp with you when you shoot your photos so you can fill in some soft lighting where you need it!
